5/29/10 Now THAT'S a Coooool Feeling...........

Note: Years ago we had this radio station (104 KRBE) and there was this DJ named Psycho Robby and each day (I think) we would come on and read these "Cool Feelings" they were hysterical. People would call in and comment and how they too had those cool feelings. Now not everyone can relate to all Cool Feelings (and they are not all bad) but most people could IMAGINE how the person in the Cool feeling would feel.

In the Late 90's Alanis Morsette came out with well basically a song of "Cool Feelings" it was called "Ironic" you know "Like a free ride when you’re already there..or Rain on your wedding day..or having spoons when all you need is a knife"

Went with a friend to the "Houston Astros: 5k Race for the Pennant Race". Here are my Cool feeling for the day!

1.) Running a race without training for 2 weeks prior to...Hear the start horn, turn the 1st coroner and see the 1st of 4 INCLINING BRIDGES...Now THATS a Cool Feeling!

I swear to you tears came to my eyes in that instant....I was like "What the HECK I did not read about this in the brochure" I was looking around and seeing if my fellow Newbie runners in the back were thinking the same thing! I did the best I could to run up every bridge. Here I was back in April and worried about running in hill country and it was a breeze, I come here and was freakin out. We made it though!

2.) Being mistaken for some bodies "Mommy/Wife" by the HUSBAND...Now THATS a Cool Feeling!

Now what makes this one so wow is... It was the last .2 miles or so, I am running on the inside closest to the curb and there are people all along there cheering us on. Mainly it is family that has been there to cheer on Sons, Daughters, Dads or MOMS.
So I look up and there is this guy holding his baby (about 7 mos old) and he is telling the baby "Look baby there is mommy..say Yea mommy good job..." He was really loud and really waving that baby in your face he kept on and on...The problem was he was looking dead at ME! He locks in on me (I had sunglasses on so you couldn’t see me NOT locking eyes on him).
The closer I got the louder he got. I thought well surely the mom is behind me....Once I run in front of him I say hi and I HEAR him say 9to the baby mind you) "HEY that's NOT MOMMY I don’t know who that is!...oooooo Wait baby THERE is mommy YEA MOMMY COME ON MOMMY!"
I turn around a see my TWIN! She was 3 inches shorter, a bit rounder, and had dark hair with ton o bleach'in going on AND she wore a black, gray and white outfit...so clearly I could see how we could get mistaken...Can you see the sarcasm?
I thought "Dude don’t you sleep with this woman and know what she looks like?"

3.) Seeing the manager from "On The Run in Pearland,Tx  NOT for me" Blog I wrote last month...Now that's a Cool Feeling!

Wow!  Crystal and I were driving around looking for a parking space and low and behold who do I see?  Mister..."Yeah my ex girlfrinend us eot complain about everything too!"  I was floored.  Well at the end of the race as me and the blue hairs (old ladies) were finishing up the race he and a groupd of "Elites" were running the course a second or third time to show offf I MEAN cool down...he looked right at me and kinda smiled I felt WIERRRRD.  But oh well why should i feel wierd?  (to really get this cool feeling go back and read that blog then you will see why)  As a great man once said "Thats all I gotta say about that!"

4.) Finishing Time being about 15 mins BETTER than you thought....Now THATS a Cooool Feeling!

So as I mentioned earlier on I had not run for 2 weeks..I have been going through stuff.  So I knew that this was going to be an embarrasing run to have to post.  But i had already bought the entery MOS ago and I knew I had to come back and post so I WAS GONNA RUN this.
Now Given no training, 4 HUGE BRIDGES, and HEAT like no other to date for me during a run I just knew that I was dead meat.
Heat: Let me tell ya about this a minute.  We started at 7:45 Am SHARP (now i know to avoid this intense thick heat).  I promise you it was a muggy 85+ degrees out there today.  Given all the wierd medical stuff that has gone on in the news with celebs and with some people I know all i could do was seriously pray "God please dont let me die up here on bridge #2, Help me get through bridge #3 oh yeah and let me make it passed bridge #4!"  It was freakin HOT.
So with all that coming into play i just knew i would be running a 60 min + run..I had not done that yet and frankly that is embarassing.  As I ran past the crazy "There's mommy guy and baby" I came down the tunnel into Minute Maid park i saw the count down clock and it wa in the negatives SERIOUSLY!  That was it i knew I had run a 78 min 5k.  I didnt even bother to check my time till we left.
Once I did check it i saw i ran it in 46:55 not to shabby I added 5 mins from the last race but it was all good and hey I was ALIVE! Now THATS a Cool Feeling!

Till Next time...
Keep runnin,
Melissa

5/17/10 I promised the Good the Bad & the Ugly..This is UGLY

Well the title says it all. I really don’t know where to start so I will just jump right on it......

Ok so truth be known I started this journey to be a "real runner" and be in better shape in August 2009. I half knew that it was not going to be an easy or quick ride, but that other half if me thought somehow I would get thru it with a strength that I THOUGHT I had inside...Now let’s face it I am a BIG girl so these halves are pretty big! Well today I feel like that "Strength" is well watered down to say the least. This is a small portion of the email I sent to Killer tonight......Excuse the "flowery" language as a friend says. You have to know that this is coming from a very hurting part of me right now.

...."that being said honestly if that had not come up I don’t know that I would want to come (to tomorrow night’s PTS) anyways.

I am so flippin ticked beyond belief. I am completely depressed & ticked off about this while weight thing. I have basically busted my butt for 8 months & have gone back & forth only 7 lbs if that!

AND to make things worse I have gained all but 2 back…don’t give me that line of bull about muscle weighing more than fat that would be true if I had muscle like Arnold the terminator but not this. I have ran, worked out, eaten better, drank water till I was blue in the freakin face I am just plain pissed. I feel like my wind is running out and I just wanna cry or hit something...."

And well peeps that is it in a nut shell. I have tried to keep a happy face and tell myself.."ey self it has taken along tome to get here it will take a long time to get back" or "This is your fault for all this be kind to yourself now and work extra hard to get what you are wanting" regardless of this or any other self talk true or not I am at a low right now.

I know we are not to compare ourselves to others BUT I can’t help but thing of 2 people in particular...who had my same story and by this time into their journey they had lost anywhere’s from 25-45 lbs. and me???? 7 whole stinkin retarded dumb lbs...heck that is nothing.....I know I know some of you happy hold outs might say "Come on that is 7 less lbs than you had in the beginning" or "well you have to start somewhere" and to those I wanna say "REALLY that is the best you got?" I am steadily losing what stinkin 25 ounces a day and this is what you got....worse yet this is the best I GOT!!!!!!!

I mean for the past several mos. I have been telling myself that I can do this and that one day in the future I will see the rewards of my efforts but all I see are those stupid idiotic numbers going back and forth between the highest numbers I have seen to date!

What am I doing wrong? Why am I here in this horrible place again? How much more can I ask of my body, my mind hell my family to endure? I take and take and take all this time for myself to work on being healthy and to work on what I think will help me accomplish my goals toward being a better me and a "real runner" but the only running I am doing is CIRCLES around this same ole place I have been for years!

don’t get me wrong I KNOW there are bigger more important issues people deal with in the world...But my world is here in my head and in my heart this is what my reality is right now. This is HUGE to me...THIS is ME.....

I just can’t understand what else I can do at this point...I want to EAT I want to eat to find that comatose place that will take me away from feeling what I am feeling now. I want eat so I can feel that feeling of relief that I get from eating...I want eat bcs that has always been what has helped me to escape....

In a last ditch effort I am going to a specialist on the 28th of this month and have a full blood panel done to see if there is anything else that could be going on. That is my last real chance at trying to find out why this weight will not come off. It should not be this hard! It should not be this devastating to a person’s soul to just be normal and be happy and be healthy!

I hate to be one of those "Fluffy people" who just flippantly say "Oh I have a thyroid problem" as they stuff Oreo’s down their throats....but I am beginning to think that maybe that could be a real issue for me. I hate feeling like this...I hate feeling so depressed...I hate feeling so anger...I hate feeling like I am less than I am as I stand around in this fat suit as the real me feels like she's suffocating inside....

So I promised to always keep it real with ya.."how you like them apples?" As I write this I cry because I know how pathetic this all sounds, how so many people will not understand these feelings I have just typed and how they may write some ugly comments...to those people just keep going, don’t judge me, TRUST me there is NOTHING You can say that I have not already said to myself there is nothing you can say that will hurt me more than my own words or thoughts have so enjoy the fact that you have never felt this!

Ok peeps all of you have been reading now lets get some talking going on here....
What are your "Fueling", Hydration & workout plans for this week-end?  No matter how big or small plese share them.............

I know there are 2 Crawfish Boils this week-end
One in Lakejackson @ Dunbar park on Sat
One at Danbury Park in Danbury on Sun

So I am looking forward to some good eats at at least one of them (meaning I hope I can make one of them at least)
As far as water goes I have been doing pretty good with no sodas all week so perhaps a soda this week en.  But I will need to up the anty on the water.  I have been doing a lot better on that front but could always do better.

Int he next week or so I will up my R/W distance as well.  Not sure if it well be 3.75  or 4 miles each time i run/walk For the month of may bcs of my PTS's  only get to R/W 2 days a week.

So whats up with all of you?

5/13/10 The Munkin is A'runnin again ~ PTS #8

Ok well here we are again another Thursday another PTS with Killer.  Today was actually not as hard as the other days except for the blanket of choking humidity that engulfed us, BUT we do live in Texas so we are pretty use to that.  I have been hydrating a lot as of late so I was able to sweat like a big..lol

Well did our norm 1 Mile w/u and it kicked me in the butt for 2 reasons.

#1) The Runnin Munchkin came for a visit AGAIN.  This as i have said can be a little weird to explain but even weirder still to live with!  See I feel like I am 4 foot tall, with legs that are like those you would see on a "little Person" , my shoulders feel like I have built in football pads and my calves today were balled up like tennis balls OH and i take about 30 quick steps to a normal mans 1 step....So imagine this runnin around ya breathing heavy for 1 mile...yeah scary i know!  This feelin comes around once in a while and i am not 100% sure what sets it off...but i hate it.  It seriously works a number on my mind as i am running.  So what to do?
#2) As i mentioned my calves felt like they had tennis balls instead of muscle in them. I actually had to stop mid run for the second time of the PTS's.
As I ran by Killer said "If i evvvva see yoiu walking during run again!" he was joking but man it was a killin me...So i hope to not do that again.

So now it was off to the "Circle of Love" Killer really has some weird ideas about this "circle of Love" thing.  It is a "circle of torture"...Nevertheless we ran, side stepped and ran our time away.  it felt GREAT!  Not Tony the tiger Great but sarcasic as hell Great!
Next it was off to his stations of pain!  This today involved, Triceps, shoulders, biceps, squats & boxing.  I actually felt like i was getting better at some of this stuff and that was encourageing to me.
Then ...let's seeeee OH yes another gorup of stations that consisted of Sit ups, revers cruntches and planks.....
I think this was it.

It was a good work out!  By far not as hard as the one earllier this week.  What i like about Killer is that he changes it up so much that you do not get bored with the work out.  To change up a quote form a Great man JPFitness "is like a box of chocolates...you never know what your gonna get!" rotf!

So Till Next time
Keep Runnin

5/11/10 SHUT Up! I am so stinkin TIREd ~ PTS #7

Personal Trainer Info:

Jonathan Pena (Angleton Local)
jpfitnessforever@hotmail.com
Cell: 832-519-6203
Currently: Running a boot camp that meets 3 days a week at Dickey Park
OMG...I am sooooo TIREd!  Today was PTS #6 and I am loving it more now than I did when I started.  I had alot of firsts today.  THe first time I did not proclaim to "Hate" Killer AND the first time I went the entire PTS and did not have "that feeling" at ALL!  I think this is bcs I took the advice or Lorella & Killer about eating better and "FUELING My boday rathen than FEED my hunger"

Today we started out in a new place...I hate CHANGE but i rolled with it (almost literally).  We met at a football field and we had to do a Mile warm up.  I mmust say I had all those old HS feelings come up...just recalling how i had to RUN 4 times around this God forsakin pit in order to clock a mile for some reason that reeally jacks with my head.  I mean i know that 4 laps is a mile but 1/2 the reason i run and train at the park is bcs it is 2 times to make a mile 2 times aorund I can handle, but 4? COME ON your Killin me Smalls!
Another reason I hate the field is bcs of the uneven ground!  That reaks havic on my calves.  I had to actually stop for the first time ever in the run part of PTS bcs of the pain in my calves.  I hate gravel I even posted a note on it on my FB called "Gravel is EVIL"..It truly is!

Today we had us 4 regulars and 2 newbies....5 gals and 1 guy this make up out Motely crew!  It is nice to bearoudn so many different peeps.
Now I did finish last in the run and i did feel like the fat girl in gym class but not in a get down on myself bad way more like a i need to change this kinda way.  Now the one thing I love about this crew is that I am the "biggest" and the "slowest" but they dont treat me like I am...they treat me like one of them...and Jonathan doesnt treat me like that either he treats me like a "normal" person just there to get healthier and better.  That feels good.  He challanges me to push myself.  I like that.  I feel so much better about myself lately and that is nice.

Now after the flash back to '94 we all got together and did 3 rounds of Push ups, set ups, and "plank slaps" (heee heee that sounds funny) ANY WHOOOOO...On the push ups I can actually bust out 20 (girl style but still) and be feelin good.  I know I can work on my form a little more that will come in time.  My sit ups and ab stuff I am doing alot better in.  the plank still gets me....BUT hey i am still a work in progress.

Next off to the tire terror...this crazy brough in like 18 wheeler size tires form oh i dont know "Tire Hell" and briught them for us all to enjoy.  We did some crazy tire drill that just reassured me that i need a better sports bra!

Nest it is off to "Arm Hell" this is were we stand around watching the person across form us struggle as much as we are in this exercise.  we did a 3 seperate moves and 2 rounds = 75!
Nest it was off to the lunges...I am actually ok with lunges...oh crap he may be reading this..lol 2 sets there
and then to the "Obstacle of Pain"....I swear he stays up and night thinking of new ways tokill us especially since he knows that i blog about him :)

So on this "Obstacle of Pain" lets just say Run, Tires, side shuffles, sprint, back peddles, sprint, tires oh and dont for get he like things in multiples so we did this 3 times.

At the end as I was gasping for air I was thinking "Dam if i never see another tire again that will be too soon" just as soon as I said that Killer interjects "Oh and you will probably be seeing these tires from now till the end (June)"  my thought?  "SHUT THE FRONT DOOR WHAT?"  Then I thought well he IS the trainer he knows best...dont tell him that dont want himt o get a big head LOL ;)

Well I did it ...and at the end of the day I realized i didnt have "that feeling".  That really excited me (I know the little things huh?)

Let me tell ya something...I have always thought that if a goal you are trying to reach costs you dearly you: 1.) Will achive it in a "healthier" manner
2.) Appreciate it more deaarly when you have it
3.) Think about what you do in order not to lose it....

As I was there sweating, moanig, gripping BUT doing the work i thought...MAN this getting healthier and FIT is really important to me...I can't wait till I get there, I cant wait to maintain it.  And I know sure as the PAIN is still there that i will most diffinately think 2,3,4 times bf  I eat unhealty/emotionally or take time of from working out.

I have already noticed a differenace in how i eat now...more on that on another blog...

Till Next Time
Keep Runnin

4/20/10 On the Run ~ Pearland NOT for me...

NOTE: I realize that everyone's experience in a paarticular situation IS different. I am ONLY sharing MY experience with the manager, Mr. Gerardo Mora at On the Run ~ Pearland. So not hate comments please.

***************************************************************************
OK for a new runner the world of running, whether it be 5k's, 10k's 1/2 or full marathons can be overwhelming to say the least. There is a wealth of information to be had and GIVEN from so many people. It is hard to focus in on one or 2 sources to trust. I am fortunate enough to have 4 friends who are avid runners & have been more than kind enough to answer questions I may have, as well as find a website or 2 that I feel stirs me right.

I have been at this running thing since Aug. 09 (w/ a 2 mon. hideous) that being said I figured that the next logical step was to go and get my foot fitted for a running shoe right? So I was planning a trip next month after this race (4/24/10). Well late last week I got a call from a friend who had a WONDERFUL experience with On the Run in Pearland. Well her excitement was contagious. So the next day bright & early I went to the same place & was hoping for a grand experience.

Well I arrived & it was ....ordinary to say the least it was nice but nothing like what my friend had exp. I was a tad disappointed. I chalked it up to "Hey different people + different sales guy = diff. exp." No biggie.

Well 2 days later I went to D.P for my weekly run. Shoes/ new socks felt fine the first 1.5 miles then it happened I felt a "hot spot" aka starting of a blister in a NEW place. So I finished the walk a little more than 4 miles that day.

My first call was to the store on the way home to let them know about it and to see if I could exchange the shoes. No Answer. Came home and blogged and my "team" told me to return the shoe...I did today and if it was not a horrible and downright embarrassing experience I don’t know what else would have been.

Emailed the manager and he said the blister may not be bcs of the shoe per say but to come in and we will see what we can do.

Got there he was less than welcoming.....Refreshed his memory as to our e-mail. He was firm & adamant in saying "You know that when you run on a blister that it will aggravate it more...if you get new shoes today that doesn’t mean the blister will be gone?" WANTED to say "NO YOU dumb idiot I thought that if i bought some NIKE MEDICATED it would make all my foot aliments disappear" but alas I settled for "Uh huh"

He asked “Well did you know these were a wide? That is probably the problem" Me: No I didn’t ask for a wide I have no idea what they were I just bought what Bryan suggested.

I finally stopped him bcs he just had this tone with me ya know? SO I said "Look I know you have alot of knowledge in this area and obviously people like me who come in from off the street don’t know this..Thus the reason for coming here, paying a little more and putting our trust in your hands. There is so much info out there and to tell you the truth I am a little overwhelmed I just want your help" And I did it I did what any self respecting girl would never do in this situation...I started to cry...WHAT THE HECK? Yes GURL I did. I was not meaning too I was just feeling very lost ans stupid at this point and it just hit me. REGARDLESS this is how the rest of it went:

Let me just hit on the "Hot spots" of the rest of the visit.

1. "You know sometimes people get started in this field and they get obsessed with it and have no idea what they are doing. This can lead to injury and blisters. It’s just a blister after all."

2. "Perhaps you are pushing yourself to hard causing you to get blisters"

To which I said "Dude do you see the size I am? Do you REALLY think I am going all Carl Lewis out there Come on really?"

3. "Well maybe bcs of your weight and you running this is causing blisters."

4. "Sometimes it is just best if you stick with the shoes you have...I mean some people say that when you find what works why change it?"

5. " How many miles a week do you run?" (Me: 12-18 mi/wk) "Well you shoe (that I am currently in Nike Torch5) is considered a Neutral shoe and that is basically a lazy man’s shoe and it allows your foot to do whatever it wants no supporting it in any given way...when you are running more and it becomes more serious then maybe think about coming back and getting a shoe"

6. "I've never heard of that shoe anyway (The Nike Torch5 I was wearing"

7. "It's not like there is this Holy Grail of all shoes find what you like"
8. "This isnt an exact science sometimes you just go wiht what works for you"
Me: "Alrighttty then...Um Can I just get my money back then..You know it was probably more my fault bcs I tried to do this on a week bf I had a run and I just bit off more than I could chew...no harm no fail."

AS he is ringing me out (credit back) he says "You know I once had a girlfriend who no matter WHAT she bought whether it be a bed or a service or shoes or whatever she was never satisfied with it..."

I wanted to say "Thus the reason for her break up with you?" But "Uh Huh" came out instead!

SO that was my deal-io today and I thought that along with everything else I would share it with you!

So Mr. Gerardo Mora at On the Run in Pearland and I did not see eye to eye that is ok but really as manager with more than 30 Years running experience (ran the 300th Annivesary of the Boston Marathon and runs 60 miles a week) I would think that he could have been a little more nicer to say the least. not to mention professional...i mean when was the last time you were compared to a mangers ex-girlfriend as you were returning an item?

So I did just what he suggested i went to another store and bought shoes that felt good for me. After all I am just a lazy man running small time here right? maybe one day when i am serious i will be worthy of his help???

I am outta here...........

5/6/10 PTS #5 ~Not for the Faint of Heart

Personal Trainer Info:

Today was a big fat booger I tell ya!
I have no idea what it was really....I ate very good today, I stayed hydrated, I stretched bf hand...it was by fare the HARDEST PTS thus far.

We did a 1 mile warm up for time.  I was able to shave off about 20 sec. from my best time..11:41 still some work to do but it is a start.
We did Abs, Arms w/weights, some legs, Boxing (in the middle of that one i actually said "I kinda hate you right now".  OOOOO & a newbie I like to call "Killer Run".

"Killer Run" is a horrible, awful, terrible thing.  I seriously think Killer stayed up last night thinking of what he could do to freak us out..it worked!
He basically put a belt around my waist with the ends in his hands a few feet behind me.
Then he said to run like heck "as if there was a DAWG coming after us" or as I like to say a KILLER (him)!
We went form pole to pole running as hard as I could as he tag along like a horrible little brother pulling on your shirt tails when you were a kid.
It was soooo stinkin hard.  We did this horrible vile thing 4 times...I think I seriously grunted & cussed him each step of the way.

After that we were done.  I felt Mr. Up Chuck lingering a while longer on this day.  You would have thought that this was my first time ever to work out in my life!  I was harsh.

Some time in the middle i kinda apologize for being such a pansy but it seems like the end of the world at the time and sometimes i cant help myself.

Afterwards I had to stop at the Grocery store for some things.  Had a funny thing happen there.  I was in so much pain & actually shaking that when i went back to the cold section & got 4 of my beloved "Green machine Naked Juices" I opened one up right there & then and slammed that 10 oz booger as if it were nothing.  A man came around the corner as i finished the last gulp sticking my eye to the opening to make sure no more was in there (NO LIE) i looked over at him with nasty slightly green mustache..I quickly wiped it away with the back of my arm like a 2 year old and said "Just worked out.."  as if that would make me look any less ridiculous..it didn't.
I would have bought more of them but man they put them so far back i was to tired to climb up and grab anymore than the 4 i could reach..Ain't that annoying?

One other thing to.  I did notice that as I was shopping, yes I was hungry & shaking, but different foods looked better to me.  I looked at the fruits, veggies, nuts and salads and was foaming at the moth and could not wait to get home and have some.  That was really the first time I had felt like that EVER!  Maybe this is a step in the right direction.  I pray so.

Well till next time
Keep Runnin

Prayer....

What does it really matter if the Gov. calls this a day of prayer? We, the people, can and will do what we were called to do regardless of thier involvment! Use this day to do what we should be doing EVERY day..Praying for our nation, city, leaders, family, church, schools, nieghbors, and our own relationship with God and others.

4/22/10 Got me another Challenge!

Well went to the park today adn I decided to take it easy since I
A) was still breaking in the shoes I bought
B) Have a race on Sat
C) still allowing the 2 blisters I have to heal.
SOOOOO brenda and I wnet and did our 4 miles.

Now since I have been walking at D.P (My favorite park in town) I had been noticing a group of people (same looking group each time) working out -Drills, running, squats ect. while i run. They have been led by the same person each time. I wanted to ask if he was thier personal trainer but had so much els on my plate i never asked.
Then tonight after we ran they were finished and sitting in the same area we were. When asked about the trainer one of the 2 ladies there immidiately said how wonderful the program was and what an awesome job the trainer does. (He wasnt there and mind you she just got down working her tail off so i listened to what she had to say!)

She told of why she started, when she started and some of the drills he puts them through. She said she feels great and that he really cares and takes time to call or email when you miss a session and so foruth. Well that was it i thought ok maybe i can try this for a fe mos and see how it works out....i mean what is the harm.

So I eventually talked to him (Jonathan Pena of JP Fitness). The prices are very reasonable. I have seen him with his clients for a few weeks...he seems to have a great work out program as well as a good rapport with his clients.

When I talke to him as well he was very friendly not intimidateing like some other trainers i have talked to. So after a talk with Jason we aggreed that I can try the program for 3 mos and see how i like it. YEA I am so excited.

Tomorrow it is packing and then off to Frederickburg...Sat the run...OH and I have a friend coming along after all..Brenda T. will be coming i am soooooo happy that i will not be alone! Wish us luck and say a prayer for our travels!

Till Next time
Keep Runnin,

Melissa
